When we think of autumn, our thoughts turn to cosy afternoons spent beside the fire, rainy evenings retreating to the local pub with friends, hearty roast dinners on a Sunday and lazy Saturday morning lay-ins as the wind blusters outside.
Like many of the UK seasons, much of what we do – and wear – is heavily dictated by the weather. We are lucky in some respects that we get to experience each season. In winter we are wrapped up in thick coats and ankle boots and in summer (if this year is anything to go by!), we are reaching for light linen dresses and breathable button-down midi-skirts.
While we consider pastels and brights in summer, the rich, sultry shades of reds, burgundy, oranges and neutrals are so often associated with the change in temperatures come autumn. We are inspired by the changing leaves, the feel in the air and the anticipation of the festive months to come.
In our favourite high-street stores and scrolling through online, we are greeted then with this beautifully rich colour palette that is so wonderfully synonymous with the autumnal months.
While we start to wave a wistful goodbye to the sunshine-filled months, we look forward to the warmer textures of corduroy, wool and faux fur in our favourite darker hues. We start to consider rain-proof footwear, cosy accessories and finding the perfect winter coat.
For now, let us enjoy the last weeks of summer, where the temperatures are still warm enough to wear jeans and a t-shirt or our favourite tea dresses with a cardigan to hand. There’s certainly no harm in planning ahead though, considering what we want to add into our A/W wardrobes, looking at a few key pieces, creating a wish-list, looking at colour palettes and scrolling through Pinterest and Instagram for bundles of seasonal sartorial inspiration.
