Timeless trends aren’t often something we associate with the younger generation wearing. Timelessness suggests something that has been around for a long time and so naturally we think of older generations – the ‘make do and mend’ era, where fashion wasn’t about consumerism, bad quality or how much you could buy in one month. It echoes more of a time where we made good, well-informed choices rather than frivolous purchases. We bought garments that were built to last. Those that, when eventually a hole would appear, or a rip would occur, it was up to us to get out our sewing kit, rather than pop on down to Topshop to buy an instant replacement.
As the saying goes in the fashion world, trends will always come back around. Those we wore during the early 90s – crop tops, flairs and embroidery – have already made a welcome return in recent years. Even the bum bag made an entrance this summer after it appeared on the catwalks of Gucci and Prada. It’s funny that those trends we thought we’d never see again and waved good riddance to, always seem to rear their heads again at some point.
Then there are the trends which never really go away. They may undergo a revival on the catwalks and subsequently appear reworked on the high-street, but season after season, they remain forever popular. So, what are the three key trends which perfectly fit this enduring mould? Stripes (the faithful Breton), polka dots (which have undergone a phenomenal revival this year) and gingham (the much-loved picnic blanket print).
Of course these too will feature variations from season to season, but they will almost always reappear – which is why they remain such timeless trends in fashion. Seen on the older generations and the younger, it seems unlikely they will ever really disappear or go out of style, making them a worthy investment for your wardrobe this year and always.
