The one thing about winter that somehow seems to make the shorter days and blustery dark mornings bearable, is the fashion.
I often hear that autumn ranks high on many people’s style lust list because it invites more creativity and opportunities to be cosy. While in summer you can flounce around in pretty skirts and leave the house without much cause for concern that you may well need a jacket (although in England this decision may be risky), the autumnal months ask for oversized knits, thick socks and rich tones of burgundy – somehow helping to counteract the fact that if you work a 9-5 job, you see a dwindling amount of daylight hours as the season creeps towards Christmas.
There’s just something about scouring online shops and the high street for weather appropriate pieces that brings a smile to my face, despite the inevitable pining for those long summer nights I go through every year.
As I write this, the weather has taken a turn for the worst. The temperature has dropped significantly to just above 10°C. Perhaps it is due to the schools now having gone back for the start of a new academic year, or even the Christmas cards I spotted the other day as I went window shopping, but my thoughts have unwittingly turned to winter coats.
It always seemed to be a big and unnecessary ceremony buying a new coat each year for school. My mum would pick up the biggest, warmest coat she could find, urging me to try it on with me inevitably looking like the Michelin Man, to my feeble pick of the thinnest and most un-warm coat I could find. Looking back, as I vividly remember shivering on many a school bench during break time because I hadn’t entirely taken my mum’s advice, these days I opt for the warmest and snuggliest coat I can find – perhaps that maternal advice did pay off after all, eventually.
With all this talk of the cold and dark days that lay in wait for us, I’ve selected just a few of my favourite winter coats – from faux fur to Biker and Prince Charles Check – below:
